Report by the Public Committee on Age Limit for Organ Transplantation
"Public Committee Recommendation to the Ministry of Health: Abolish the Maximum Age for Receiving Organs for Transplantation.
The public committee headed by Dr. Eyal Katvan, which deliberated on the issue, presented its recommendations to the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Prof. Roni Gamzu, and to the chairperson of the steering committee of the National Transplant Center, Prof. Rafi Beyar. The committee unanimously recommended the abolishment of the procedure according to which maximum ages were set for entry into the list of candidates for transplantation in Israel. The recommendations of the committee were submitted to the Director General of the Ministry of Health and to the chairperson of the steering committee. If they are accepted, age limits for entry into the list of candidates for transplantation will thereby be abolished.
The committee also recommended that age should not be utilized in the allocation formula, except when there is pertinent medical justification for this. The minority position on the committee, however, presented a view which holds that age should be utilized in the allocation formula, in the method for determining points and eligibility, becoming moderately reduced the older the patient is".
